This is my final post for EDM310. I have really enjoyed this class and my teacher. I truly believe Dr. Strange was right about acting as a coach. That is how his teaching is reflected on students and it has put me more at ease in the classroom. I have really felt like he wants his students to do well in his class and has gone above and beyond to make himself available and devote himself to us entirely when we needed help. I learn best this way if someone is there to guide me from beginning to end, and that's exactly what he did. Every week he updated the class blog so there would never be any confusion with assignments or a failed attempt to seek his help on a project because you could always contact him through this.
Every time we learned something new he would posted a home-made video repeating what he just taught us, either so the students could go back and learn it all over again if they forgot and use it to practice, or if they were absent one day and missed class. These videos were on the Internet so you could watch them anytime, and when you needed to study. I personally watched them over and over and was very grateful that they were there. They really helped me a great deal. They were so detailed and you could even stop and start them to learn at your own pace. He always explained things very thoroughly. I sometimes learned more through those than in class because i could stop and start them to listen again. Computers and technology can be very stressful and frustrating just as much as helpful sometimes, and he made sure he told us explicit instructions so everything would always come out right. If you watched the videos and did everything step by step as he explained it you couldn't go wrong, and that was comforting. I like classes where you can be certain about whats going to be right or wrong on a test or project. He didn't leave us guessing on anything. Everything was right there in front of us and all on the access of any computer. I really learned a lot and am all for the use of the instructional videos. I watched almost all of them multiple times and they were a huge help.

The Stanford Challenge
In this video, a psychology teacher at Stanford is interviewed about the study she did on something called the growth mindset. The growth midset is something that is used as a tool to help students learn better by teaching them to think of themsleves as being able to continue to learn things their whole life and that they will gain intellingence gradually as they learn more everyday. The other mindset of students that is mentioned is one where students think that just doing one thing can allow them to appear smart, such as studying for a test by cramming, memorization, and then forgetting everything immediately after. A study was done for 8 weeks where she took half a class and taught them study skills, but with the growth mindset, and then the other half teaching just the study skills. The results included grades raised by the growth midset students and of course a bad report for the other group lacking the mindset. The video proved that seeing the big picture and knowing that you will gain intelligence at a pace throughout your whole life gives you some confidence to learn with an incentive to keep getting better and that all of your education is getting you somewhere.
The teachers at Stanford could guess which students were taught with the mindset by their attitudes and academic performance. The psychologist, Carol Dweck, also informs us that even after we begin to age our brain is still growing and we need to use it constantly, not just when we have a test. She tells us that it is necessary in the job world after school to improve and be promoted in businesses from thinking this way. She says that if these students want to excel in their career they will need to keep this mindset even when they get out of college.
It is important as teachers for us to instill this idea for all of our students whether they choose to use it or not. The point is... teachers can always choose to teach this way in hopes that our students will choose to go about learning and working with this mindset. Our future is in their hands so our teaching this way may help them rise to success in their jobs for the rest of their lives. This concept helps students and teachers take the purpose for their education seriously.

The Teacher's Domain
I had a difficult time watching the movies without interruption becuase the quality was not perfect when i played them, but besides that i think they would be very useful. The videos would be wonderful to use in a classroom and help all different students who learn in different ways be able to connect with a lesson i am trying to teach. I think I could use it for all sorts of subjects too. The children would respond better to a video like this because it would be like watching TV and different from any day to day routine listening to a teacher talk.
The videos also had a wide variety of topics like i said to suit more than one subject, and i think any grade could make use of these. Children could gain help paying attention watching these movies because they provide a helpful way for them to remember information. It is almost like a study guide for kids that the teacher can set up on the computer, except it wouldn't be written so they could lose it or get bored with it. If the teacher wanted to have a review day before a test this would be a good and fun break for kids.
Visual learning is usually successful, for all ages. The videos grabbed you and displayed colorful and vibrant picture that would be a good way for students to retain the facts that they were learning. This is a very good resource for elementary school teachers to incorporate technology in the classroom. They can encourage children to learn how to use it, and teach students that it can be a good and helpful source of learning in the future if it works for them and they get more out of it than other study ideas.

Wikipedia and Spreadsheets in Classroom Instruction
After reading the NPR articles i have concluded that Wikipedia is obviously not a good resource for information because it is not reliable anymore. It lacks an encyclopedia reputation according to the accusations made by the "Wired" program. The technology grad student found a data service that can detect the changes the parties on Wikipedia make to their own information. In a way this is good because we are able to see how certain business and the government portray themselves as opposed to the correct information given by Wikipedia about them. Any program that has some way for anyone to hack in and change information is not a reliable source for research. The data service invented is helpful in detecting the truth, but we should not have to also check that site every time we go to Wikipedia. These are important groups and information we are talking about too including, congress, Diebold voting machines, and popular industries like Walmart that supply most of the country with jobs.
Spreadsheets can be used for many things in the classroom to help teachers teach children certain subjects and for the children to have an easier way to learn and see how things work this way. The most common way to use spreadsheets is in mathematics. The sheets can be used to produce a bar graph, line graph, scatter plot, or chart teaching information in a more visual way for students to learn. The access of a spreadsheet is easy to use so students can pick it up themselves and calculate problems easier. For example, students can enter data into cells, that data is organized then to where they can enter functions to calculate it for a sum, mean, or product of anything etc. Having the information organized into the cells makes it easier for a student to see how the function or formula, what have you, is completed because it is like a step by step process.
For lower grades, graph spreadsheets would work well in class taking surveys or using for comparisons of data or statistics being studied. A grade book spreadsheet is probably the second most common use for a teacher. This would be easy to enter grades names and separate one class from another for your records. You could also average the grades easier this way because they would be in columns and organized. Spreadsheets for older children can incorporate higher thinking skills in some lessons since the children are comparing, organizing and eventually arriving at a conclusion. According to this website, http://www.ceap.wcu.edu/houghton/EDELCompEduc/Themes/Spreadsheets/spreadsheets.html
"the use and creation of spreadsheets is required by some states in the Computer Literacy competencies for all preservice and inservice teachers and their faculty."

iTunes University
iTunes University is a learning tool now used to help students and teachers use technology to further the time and place where information is learned and also to personalize it right into the hands of the students. It is a program that was first used to download music from computers to ipod or iphones, and can now download videos, music, or information relative to school curriculum. The information is available to colleges and universities all over the country and is accessible twenty-four hours a day. Students get excited about using technology like this alot more than sitting in a classroom listening to someone talk. It also makes it easier for the professor to make the information clearer and more easy to understand for their students. A student has no excuse to complain about school with a learning tool like this. The pictures and videos made available right in their hand for them to see clearly and access whenever they want is a privilege and is fun for young adults.
Most students spend more time on these devices than watching TV or listening to the radio anyway. The iTunes go hand in hand now with business and pleasure for them. This also makes it possible for anyone to access information to see and learn first hand if they wish.http://www.apple.com/education/itunesu_mobilelearning/itunesu.html Western Carolina University uses iTunes to give students updates on school announcements, lectures, upcoming events, seminars, and class materials they may use to complete their courses. It is also mentioned, that there must be iTunes software present to use this method. Any University with this software has unlimited resources, such as their mention of pod casts. The site includes instructions on how to set up a podcast for a professor's class and the equipment they would need to do so. Teachers can also set up lesson plans with iTunes to use on their personal iPods.http://itunes.wcu.edu/

iPods used in instruction
These days many univeristies are using iPods to help teach and get information across to students faster and more efficiently. Duke University is well known for using them in the classroom, and I also found that Indiana University uses them as well. Duke gave out over 1600 iPods to new students last year with orientation material on them. In this way, while they instruct the students gave have the information in the form of digital media right in their hands. The teachers can incorporate videos, internet links, and text guides in their daily class lessons. This year Duke will only use iPods in certain classrooms and for teachers who request them. The distribution is controlled by the universitie's Center for Instructional Technology they track the use of the iPods through enrollment of classes. When a student is given one they own it and they keep it for use in the future as well.
Indiana Univeristy is just now using the technology as it was not a new idea for Duke. On their website Indiana Univeristy has a notice of a workshop relating to how the professors would be able to use the iPods in the classroom. The notice talks about the use of software for the iPods so the instructor to create educational content to play for the students such as virtual tours of museums, text related films, or portable study quizzes. http://teaching.iub.edu/event_full.php?coursesid=2192

The Fischbowl Again
I chose the month of October labeled "Two Steps Forward" to read in the fischbowl. It was a blog about anyone having access to this school's internet service through personal devices such as cell phones and iPods. This access is filtered and because of this students are restricted from video sites such as Utube and Google Video. The author of this blog does not agree with this and believes that it contradicts his school's motto. The motto is basically to trust students to make good decisions and learn from their mistakes, not shelter them and punish them by taking away all their learning resources. According to the author the students are not expected to make the wrong decisions with the advantage of using these sites.
I believe that the motto of the school itself is the most ignorant way to view young people today. It would be nice to be able to assume that kids will make the right decisions given privileges in technology that could further their education. However, the reality is that they don't. Anyone who works with teenage kids on a regular bases is stupid if they think they are not going to abuse these privileges. Curiosity is in the nature of their age. Kids today, because of this media and access to certain technologies, are getting in trouble and making wrong decisions at an earlier age. Technology can be a wonderful aid to education, but can also be a window to inappropriate substance on the Internet for kids. The author seems to think that the school is depriving teachers and students of advanced, and helpful learning tools. The truth is, computers and the Internet help and technology has become a whole new and popular language all over the world, but we can live without some of it. The future is full of technology but i don't think we are going to be quote "deprived" from restrictions to videos. The are a lot of other ways to learn and expand your mind. If the teacher is a good one, they can create other ways to make it fun and exciting for the kids. It is better to protect our young kids from the chance of being exposed to violent or sexual content that by the way has also become a popular language plaguing the world and causing so many problems, than to improve every inch of the curriculum with technology.

The Fischbowl
The winning blog was very interesting. He made some excellent points. Id have to say that i definitely agree with him, but there are always those people who are not fans of change and never will be. Even when its affecting the entire world around them, it is still sometimes never appreciated or accepted. It is embarassing and quite unprofessional that students in schools are using technology today that they fortunately have to aid in their learning, and the teachers dont even know how to use it themselves. I do believe it sets a bad example for children and frankly, admits the teachers are not doing their job well. Even if a teacher is not fond of new age technology or struggles in understanding it, they should still accept the fact that it is part of their job and that it is important for their students to have a guide while they learn to use it themselves.
He is undoubtably right. The new generation is beginning to ask that question how did those before us live without all this? Technology is EVERYWHERE. You really wont be able to escape it in the educational system, it brings in too many positive results. I find that even though i have grown up with computers all my life, i still struggle to make peace with them. I've had some pretty frustrating experiences with technology. For some reason, for me, it NEVER works longer than a day before something has to be fixed. I use to ask myself what good is this for me to use if it breaks or overloads or runs out of memory alllll the time. However, im sure that happens to many people and that is what "tech support" is there for. Usually it can always be fixed if your patient. To sum up my response to the fischbowl, i am very glad that i am able to take a class like EDM310 because even though i have trouble with it, i will still be able to actually use technology to help me teach my own students when i get out of college. Im glad there are classes like this available, so it wont be a hassel learning all of it from the beginning when its time to enter a new school and a new job.

International Blog Use

Julie Lindsay, is the head of information technology at Quatar Academy in Doha, Quatar, near the Persian Gulf. She created a blog for her school to encourage extended education ideas for the teachers and faculty there. Her most recent update was a notice about an educational speaker who organizes workshops for teachers containing information about web tools, 21st century literacy, and global projects. She also uses the blog to integrate technology into her school system to furthur the E learning and digital literacy concepts. One of her posts included something called "the horizon project", which is an example of the main part of Linsay's job. It is a project used to merge technologies together in the educational system and to communicate which ones work and which ones dont for the teacher and student, and also HOW they work for teachers and students in schools all over the world.http://123elearning.blogspot.com/

Blogs in the K-12 Classroom

The first website i found in discussion of blogs used in the classroom was actually a blog itself talking about the successful use of blogs for teachers and students in Michigan and New York. The blog's purpose is to connect 2 different schools to each others opinion about an article. The teacher used this as a way to communicate with other students in the country, and also to get the kids minds working to respond and give feedback on what they had read. The site mentions that the teacher went to the library at her school and set this clog up solely for a particular assignment that she knew would interest her students more this way. The site also stresses that the blog is used because of the information and communication it provides, not just for added technology.http://schoolof.info/infomancy/?p=104 (This site did not contain any pictures.)
The second website had a simple picture of a school bus. This representing that an obvious block portal for students called "Young- Blocks 4/5/6". This site is sort of anonymous in several ways. It does not list the school or particular details about the classes, except that they are science related, but it does list the assignments for the students and the updated news for the classroom posted on the right. The blog also has a set list of rules which include not using last names, addresses, etc., or any personal information. It also asks the students to use appropriate language, and respect classmates' comments. It reminds them to get use to using a computer and use this particular exercise to practice their skills. The students have individual blogs where they can communicate back and forth with each other, and their teacher about nearly anything related to class and keep them in touch with whats going on.http://young456.21classes.com/

ACCESS
ACCESS is a program that provides students with online courses that are equipped with high quality instruction that will challenge them more in their studies. However, its main appeal is the up to date technology that can aid teachers in guiding students through these courses. No matter where the students and teachers are, they can still have "access" to this program, because it will eventually be available to everyone in the Alabama high schools. Hopefully by 2010 they expect to have this in every high school in the state. Its main goal is to provide the concept of distant learning for every student. They want every student to eventually take at least one distant learning course in high school and to give them opportunity to be fluent in the usage of 21st century technology to use to their educational advantage.
The ACCESS program is designed to combine traditional, IVC, and online instruction. Teachers have the opportunity to become familiar with 21st century technology too and use it for the greater good of instruction. They are provided with extra credits for students in a school year, and classes for extended day schools, summer schools, night schools, and home bound children. They have multimedia and reference tools to enhance their instructions. They can also offer advanced placement courses or just basic core courses. Overall this type of teaching will promote connectivity with other teachers and students all over the world via computers.

How i might use ALEX
As a student myself i like to work with others and compare ideas and help each other out with assignments and study together. I learn best through discussion and hands on stuff as well as studying alone only when it comes time for an exam. So, ALEX would be very useful to me in that i would use it to get ideas from other teachers and compare mine with theirs as well. I think especially at the beginning of my career i would want to think of exciting ways to teach and gain my students attention so i would know what would work for their grade level and what wouldnt. I think that everybody needs a little help and advice in the beginning and this is a fast and easy way to connect to those in the same profession as you without even leaving your home or school.
I would like to introduce it to my students too to make sure they knew there are resources like this to help with areas of interest or problems for them in their school subjects. It also teaches them to use and rely on the internet more and get excited about learning. I think the Distance Learning feature would be useful for kids who might get bored with the curriculum and wanted to be more challenged in class. ALEX would offer more advanced studies if their school did not offer any. I would definitley use the Personal Workspace option because i am constantly trying to find ways to organize my work and store it in a place i know it will not get lost or destroyed. Overall i think i would have everything i needed as far as outside help in my teaching career with ALEX right at my personal computer, how convenient.

The Alabama Learning Exchange
The Alabama Learning Exchange is a useful online resource for teachers and students designed by the Alabama Department of Education that provides many tools and materials on the web, some introduced by certified teachers themselves, that one can use as a fast reference for learning. There is alot this site offers to better organize the information you find useful to you. Its appeal and focus is that it finds easy and fast ways for you to improve the way you learn or teach by sharing methods and new information or knowledge.
ALEX has many options to make your experience organized and convenient. The Course of Study option allows to you zero in and choose a particular suject or grade level to focus on. The WebLink option divides the suject matter into separate links that are grouped together by teacher, student, and administrator's sections whatever your status may be.The Lesson Plan option has the choice of searcing lesson plans used by different teachers and schools on every grade level and subject you need. It also allows you to write and save your own lesson plans to add to and use in the future. The Personal Workspace option lets you store your finds from the searches you used and the work you responded with such as your lesson plans. This feature lets you keep your work and share it with others for as long as you need it. The Professional Learning tool allows you to read news, and check out groups that promote development of learning for certain types of study. It shows ways to allow access for better growth and communication in your particular profession. The Access Learning feature which is really A-labama C-onnecting C-lassrooms E-ducators and S-tudents S-tatewide is a helpful way to provide speacial programs such as advanced courses for students through audio and video teaching to challenge them. These are opportunities that their school may not necessarily provide or require for them. They are all in the content of the Distance Learning tool.

My Response to the Fischbowl Movie
I thought the movie was very informative. I learned things that i never knew and that were interesting and got me thinking about thte future. I had no idea how many other countries spoke our language and were also in tune to the rest of the world when most of the U.S. only speaks one language being English and that in that way are not as connected to countries other than ours. However, i was impressed with the statistics about the advancement of computer knowledge and usage in the past 10-20 years in the U.S. I feel it has and will continue to aid in the education and development of my children and those that i teach.

Today is the second day of class and I just got my picture taken. I am an elementary education major here at south, and i am doing so because i love children, they are my passion. I am also here because i wanted a job that would be rewarding and that i would enjoy every day.I am 25 years old and have lived in this area all my life. This is my second time in school. I am just now a junior and once i graduate i would like to get my masters degree as well.
